Shaker Heights Matches Donations to Fight Food Insecurity

Shaker Heights, Ohio, is taking decisive action to combat food insecurity as federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits face reductions due to the ongoing government shutdown. Local officials announced a plan to match donations to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland, pledging to contribute “dollar for dollar” up to a total of $10,000. This initiative, part of the “Shaker Shares: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” campaign, will remain open for contributions until November 30, 2023.

In light of uncertainties surrounding the federal SNAP program, the City of Shaker Heights is urging residents and workers within the community to contribute funds. Donations made through the Hunger Network website will support the Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center, which has experienced a notable increase in demand for food assistance. Mayor David Weiss emphasized the community’s proactive spirit, stating, “In true Shaker spirit, many residents have asked what they can do to assist those who rely on federal food benefits.”

From January to September of this year, the Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center served an average of 84 households per month. However, in October alone, this number surged to 133 households at the city’s food distribution site located at Shaker Heights Community Church, 20120 Lomond Blvd. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, additional food distributions are scheduled for November 17, 19, 24, and 26.

“This effort can make a real difference,” Weiss added, urging residents who are able to donate to the Hunger Network.

The city plans to continually update this resource list as more options become available, ensuring that residents have access to vital assistance during this challenging time.

Shaker Heights officials remain committed to supporting their community through these challenging circumstances. The initiative not only highlights the urgency of food insecurity but also showcases the community’s dedication to helping their neighbors in need.
