What to Expect on MLK Day: Open and Closed in Illinois

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, recognized on January 19, 2025, brings notable changes to the operational status of various institutions across Illinois. As a federal holiday, many government offices will be closed, impacting local services, while numerous businesses will maintain regular hours. This day honors the significant contributions of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, encouraging community involvement.

Several government entities will suspend operations for the holiday. According to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, state government offices, including facilities managed by the Illinois Secretary of State, will be closed. Consequently, there will be no access to driver services or other state-run programs. Additionally, mail delivery will not occur since U.S. Post Offices will also be closed.

While government facilities will not operate, many private businesses, such as restaurants, grocery stores, and retail establishments, will remain open. This offers residents the opportunity to complete errands or enjoy a meal out.

Schools in Illinois will also observe the holiday, with most districts closing for the day. For the 2025-2026 academic year, districts have designated this as a holiday, meaning no students or teachers will be present. However, a recent law allows students in public middle and high schools to receive an excused absence for participating in civic activities related to the holiday. This legislation, effective since January 1, 2023, permits students at least one day off to engage in events that honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Financial markets will be closed in observance of the holiday as well. Both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will suspend trading on January 19, with regular activities resuming the following day.

As communities across Illinois prepare for the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, residents are encouraged to reflect on his legacy and consider participating in local service projects. This federal holiday not only commemorates Dr. King’s contributions but also invites individuals to engage in their communities, fostering a spirit of service and unity.
