Construction Begins on New Rourke Bridge in Lowell

Residents of Lowell, Massachusetts, are about to witness a significant infrastructure development with the commencement of the new Rourke Bridge construction project. Situated on Pawtucket Boulevard at Old Ferry Road, the initiative aims to enhance connectivity and accessibility across the Merrimack River.

Site work has already begun, marked by an increase in construction barrels and flags along the riverbank. According to information from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, extensive shoreline preparation is underway, laying the groundwork for the phased platform construction that is set to begin this winter.

On November 27, 2023, John Goggin, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, confirmed that the initial work involves setting up temporary structures called cofferdams, which will support the six bridge piles. These cofferdams are crucial for ensuring a stable foundation for the new bridge.

The location of the new bridge will span the Merrimack River and will be built at an angle west of the existing structure. It will feature a six-span, seven-girder steel design that incorporates dedicated lanes for both vehicles and pedestrians. This new bridge will have a lifespan of approximately 75 years and will be three times wider than the current two-lane configuration, allowing for four lanes of traffic.

The construction will notably enhance pedestrian access, as the design incorporates dedicated walkways and bicycle lanes. Those walking along the Vandenberg Esplanade on the north side of the river will have an excellent view of the project as it progresses.

The project also addresses the need for improved visibility and safety for both motorists and pedestrians. Unlike the older, cage-like design of the existing Rourke Bridge, the new structure features an open design, significantly improving sight lines over the river.

As work continues, the community will have a unique opportunity to observe the transformation of this vital infrastructure. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to keep an eye on the construction site, as the evolution of the Rourke Bridge promises to bring lasting benefits to the Lowell area.

In a related context, the recent passing of George O’Hare on November 26, 2023, at the age of 87, underscores the changes in public life and technology throughout the years. O’Hare served on the Greater Lowell Technical High School Committee and was deeply involved in the community, witnessing significant advancements in communication and transportation during his lifetime. His contributions to local governance remain a testament to the ongoing evolution of Lowell.

As the new Rourke Bridge project progresses, it symbolizes not just an engineering feat, but also a continuation of Lowell’s rich history and commitment to community improvement. Residents are encouraged to engage with the project, as it unfolds in the coming months.
