Ivica Zubac Shines with 18 Points and 19 Rebounds Against Lakers

In a standout performance, Ivica Zubac delivered a critical game for the Los Angeles Clippers with 18 points and 19 rebounds in their 112-104 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at the Intuit Dome on January 7, 2024. His impressive statistics included ten offensive rebounds, surpassing the Lakers’ total of six. This marked a significant rebound for Zubac, who had faced challenges earlier in the season.

Before the game, veteran guard James Harden took a moment to motivate Zubac, urging him to aim for a performance of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds. “I basically told him we need a 20-point and 15-rebound game from him tonight and to be physical down around the basket,” Harden said. Zubac took these words to heart, showcasing one of his most dominant games of the season.

Coach Encourages Zubac’s Growth

Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue was not aware of the pre-game exchange but expressed his support for Harden’s encouragement. After the game, he remarked, “Tell him to tell him [Zubac] again. And again, tomorrow and the next day.” Zubac’s performance was not a surprise to Lue, who noted that Zubac had indicated he was feeling better than he had in weeks. “He said, ‘I feel the best I have felt in a long time,’” Lue shared.

Zubac’s journey this season has been marked by recovery from a Grade 2 ankle sprain sustained in a game against the Lakers on December 20, 2023. Initially expected to be sidelined for three weeks, he made a swift return to the lineup after just two weeks. However, his first game back did not reflect his potential, as he recorded only four points and seven rebounds in a 146-115 loss to the Boston Celtics.

Since then, Zubac has rebounded impressively, averaging 11.1 rebounds per game, placing him third in the NBA, with a shooting percentage of 60.3% from the field. His performance against the Lakers, which included surpassing Elton Brand‘s franchise record for rebounds, positioned him to now have 4,718 career rebounds, trailing only DeAndre Jordan at 7,988.

Looking Ahead

The Clippers, now holding a record of 20-24, are set to embark on a three-game road trip following their home game against the Brooklyn Nets on January 8, 2024. Zubac’s ability to dominate in the paint will be crucial as the team looks to improve their standings. Lue highlighted Zubac’s impact, stating, “His ability to clean up missed shots around the basket… was huge for us.”

It seems that a bit of motivation from Harden was just what Zubac needed to regain his rhythm and contribute significantly to the team’s success. As the Clippers move forward, Zubac’s performance will be essential in their quest for a playoff spot.
