U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on March 19, 2024, to discuss a draft peace plan aimed at resolving the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine. The meeting, which also included Jared Kushner, was framed by tensions as Putin accused Ukraine’s European allies of undermining U.S.-led efforts, deeming their demands “absolutely unacceptable.”
The discussions come on the heels of a recent dialogue between U.S. officials and a Ukrainian delegation regarding the peace proposal. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described those talks as “productive,” but emphasized that further efforts were necessary to advance the negotiation process.
Putin’s Retaliation Threats and Accusations Against Europe
During the meeting, Putin threatened retaliation for recent Ukrainian strikes on vessels transporting Russian oil within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone. He indicated that Russia would broaden its military targets to include Ukrainian ports and ships. Putin expressed discontent over Europe’s role in the peace negotiations, asserting that European nations lack a genuine peace agenda and have instead chosen to support continued conflict.
Putin stated that European countries had altered peace proposals with “demands that are absolutely unacceptable to Russia,” thus obstructing the peace process while placing the blame on Moscow. Such remarks align with Russia’s narrative since Donald Trump assumed office, with renewed talks emerging earlier this year.
Zelenskyy’s European Tour and Ireland’s Support for Ukraine
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was engaged in a European tour to rally support against Russia’s invasion. While visiting Ireland, he announced new funding for Ukraine, with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin pledging €125 million (approximately $145 million) in aid. This includes €100 million for non-lethal military assistance and €25 million to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has faced significant attacks as winter approaches.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a “decent peace,” highlighting that the ongoing efforts must result in a definitive resolution rather than a mere pause in hostilities. He reiterated the importance of collective support from European nations, stating, “From what I’ve seen, America takes serious steps to end the war in one way or another.”
During his visit to Ireland, Zelenskyy was honored with a military band and an official reception. He expressed profound gratitude to the Irish people for their steadfast support against Russian aggression in his message in the visitor’s book.
The situation remains fluid as peace talks continue, with both sides navigating complex geopolitical landscapes. The outcome of Witkoff’s discussions with Putin could significantly influence the trajectory of the ongoing conflict and the broader regional stability in Eastern Europe.
