Wild West Historian Paul Marquez to Share Insights in Avon

The Eagle County Historical Society is set to host a special presentation by renowned Wild West historian Paul Marquez on February 22, 2024. The event will take place at the Avon Public Library at 15:00 and is designed to engage history enthusiasts and budding genealogists alike.

Paul Marquez, who currently serves as the president of the Wild West History Association, will share his expertise in genealogy research, focusing on the colorful figures of the American West. His presentation will provide attendees with valuable tips on uncovering hidden family histories and connections, particularly within the context of the Wild West era.

During the talk, Marquez will recount his own family history, revealing a fascinating link between his great-great-grandmother and the infamous outlaw William H. Bonny, better known as Billy the Kid. He will also discuss his family’s ties to Pat Garrett, the lawman credited with capturing and killing Bonny, showcasing the interconnectedness of these historical figures.

Kathy Heicher, president of the Eagle County Historical Society, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, stating, “This is a great year for celebrating history. Wild West history is particularly exciting.” Heicher noted that 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the United States and Colorado’s 150th anniversary, making this program timely and relevant.
