Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished matriarch of San Pedro, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Known affectionately as Nene, she was surrounded by family and friends throughout her life, which was marked by love, creativity, and community engagement.
Born into a Croatian fishing family, Arlene was proud of her heritage, which traced back to her grandfather, John Antonovich, who emigrated from Korcula, Croatia, in 1907. She dedicated her life to her family and her community, actively participating in local environmental initiatives and serving as an ambassador for her cultural roots.
Life of Art and Family
Arlene was an accomplished artist, known for her oil paintings that captured the beauty of the Californian coast. As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she enjoyed painting en plein air from her ocean-view beach house. Friends and family often gathered there to share meals and create memories, with Arlene known for her exceptional culinary skills, particularly her beloved Croatian seafood dishes.
Family gatherings were a cherished tradition, with celebrations such as 4th of July fireworks and Christmas Eve seafood feasts taking place at her residence on Bluff Place. Arlene instilled a love for the ocean in her four sons, teaching them to swim at Cabrillo Beach and fostering a deep connection to the sea that has influenced generations.
A Lasting Legacy
Arlene leaves behind a large family, including her sons Robb, Craig, Karl, and Chris Heberer, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her influence extended beyond her immediate family, as she embraced the friends of her sons as if they were her own. The love and warmth she shared will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
In accordance with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held for family and close friends. Those wishing to honor Arlene’s memory may consider making donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where her sons spent many afternoons, or the San Pedro Art Association to support local arts initiatives.
Arlene Antonovich Harrison’s legacy will endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and the San Pedro community, a testament to a life well-lived and a spirit that touched many.
