Boston University Launches “You Are Why” Campaign to Boost Community Impact

Boston University (BU) has announced the launch of its new campaign, “You Are Why,” designed to emphasize the critical roles that science, humanities, research, and education play in fostering an empathetic society. This initiative aims to strengthen partnerships that support BU’s mission to improve the quality of life for individuals in Boston, throughout the United States, and globally.

Campaign Goals and Community Engagement

In her letter to the BU community dated September 26, 2023, BU President Melissa Gilliam articulated the objectives of the “You Are Why” initiative. The campaign seeks to engage supporters of the university’s research efforts, collaborate more closely with elected officials, and attract new partners who share a commitment to addressing pressing societal challenges.

Gilliam highlighted specific examples of BU’s contributions, including a bionic pancreas aiding individuals with type 1 diabetes and scholarships for exceptional students from Boston Public Schools. These initiatives illustrate BU’s commitment to advancing research and discovery that directly benefits communities.

“Fundamentally, the work we do at Boston University is about improving people’s lives,” Gilliam stated. She acknowledged the significant challenges facing higher education today, such as rapidly evolving technology, diminishing research budgets, and declining public trust. These factors do not only hinder universities; they also impact the communities they serve.

Focus on Collaboration and Innovation

BU’s campaign emphasizes the importance of collaboration. Gilliam noted that the initiative recognizes the need for faculty, students, staff, alumni, donors, and government agencies to work together toward shared goals. “You Are Why” aims to highlight groundbreaking research achievements made possible through federal and philanthropic support.

Moreover, the campaign calls for innovative partnerships that can broaden the scope of BU’s work. The university excels in convergent research, which integrates multiple fields, and seeks to cross institutional boundaries to collaborate with industries, foundations, and nonprofits. This approach aims to create mutually beneficial opportunities that serve the greater good.

“This initiative is a call to action grounded in service, collaboration, and shared purpose,” Gilliam explained. “Our work is inherently collaborative—and accountable to the communities we serve.” The campaign seeks to showcase the impact of BU’s scholarship, teaching, and service missions on the lives of patients, students, families, and communities.

Through the “You Are Why” campaign, Boston University aims not only to enhance its research capabilities but also to reaffirm its commitment to societal improvement. By fostering a united front among various stakeholders, the initiative seeks to create a more engaged and empathetic society, ultimately shaping the future for students who will become tomorrow’s leaders, scientists, artists, and citizens.
