Judith Ann Ernst, a beloved educator and vibrant community member, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Redondo Beach, California, on October 4, 2025. She was 81 years old. Judith, affectionately known as Judy, was a lifelong resident of the South Bay area and left a lasting impact through her dedication to education and her adventurous spirit.
Born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach, California, Judy graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1961 before pursuing her studies at UCLA. In a remarkable achievement for a woman in business at that time, she founded the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach in 1968 at just 24 years old. Starting with only twelve students, including her three children, she established a nurturing environment that encouraged curiosity and kindness, embodying the principles of the Montessori method.
A Life Defined by Passion and Adventure
Judy’s contributions to education were profound. Her pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment will continue to inspire many who had the privilege of knowing her. Beyond her role as an educator, Judy lived life with an infectious enthusiasm. She embraced adventure, often free-diving with her husband, John Ernst, and exploring fashion with a bold sense of style. Known for her elegant and classic appearance, Judy never shied away from making a statement.
In addition to her many interests, Judy developed a passion for tennis. She frequently participated in tournaments alongside John and her son, Jeff. Her love for the sport endured throughout her life, and she remained an active player even in her later years. Judy’s vibrant energy and zest for life will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
Remembering a Legacy of Courage and Compassion
Judith is survived by her husband of 45 years, John, and her children, Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila, along with eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones; her daughter, Nadine; a grandson; and a great-grandson.
Judy’s life exemplified courage, curiosity, and compassion, leaving a significant legacy for those she touched. A celebration of her life is scheduled for November 2, 2025, providing an opportunity for family and friends to honor her memory and the profound impact she had on her community.
