Community Mourns the Passing of Kathleen Ann Giacalone, 88

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a beloved educator and community member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in San Pedro on April 24, 1937, she was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. Kathleen lived a fulfilling life with her husband, Rosario “Jack” Giacalone, in Lomita, where they raised their family.

Kathleen dedicated nearly four decades to teaching elementary school, impacting countless students during her 39-year career. She was known for her passion for education and her commitment to nurturing young minds. Upon her retirement, she embraced her love for travel, exploring new places and cultures.

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack; their daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek; and son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone. She leaves behind four grandchildren: Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna, as well as many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.

In honoring her legacy, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kathleen’s name to several organizations close to her heart. These include Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild.

Funeral Arrangements and Community Impact

A Funeral Mass will take place on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. The community is invited to gather and pay their respects to a woman who shaped many lives through her teaching and kindness.

Kathleen’s contributions to education and her compassionate spirit left a lasting impact on those who knew her. As friends and family come together to celebrate her life, they reflect on the joy she brought to everyone around her. Her legacy of love, learning, and generosity will continue to inspire future generations.
