Idaho State University’s Department of Physics, in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello, is set to unveil its Haunted Science Laboratory to the public on October 25, 2023. The event will take place at the Bannock County Event Center from 16:00 to 21:00, located in Commercial Building B, just north of the Pocatello Downs Grandstand. This unique initiative promises an engaging blend of science and Halloween festivities.
Hands-On Science and Spooky Fun
The Haunted Science Laboratory offers a variety of interactive exhibits designed to educate and entertain visitors of all ages. Attractions include a Van de Graaf generator and laser demonstrations, alongside multiple educational activities. Many of these exhibits draw inspiration from the popular Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, with an emphasis on explaining the scientific principles behind the fun.
“This is a great opportunity to share the wonder of science with your family and have some spooky fun,” stated Steve Shropshire, a professor of physics at Idaho State University. He emphasized that costumes are encouraged, adding to the festive atmosphere of the event.
Admission costs $5 per individual or $10 per family, with a limit of six people per family. Cash payment is required, and all proceeds will support charities backed by Kiwanis, which aim to benefit children in Southeast Idaho.
A Tradition of Learning and Community Support
For over a decade, the Haunted Science Laboratory has served as a free educational field trip for local schools before its public opening. In 2024, nearly 2,000 students and adults participated in the field trip program, highlighting the event’s role in promoting STEM education. When the laboratory opened to the public last year, over 450 visitors explored the lab’s offerings.
