Wayne Police Showcase Drone Technology at School Event

On December 8, 2023, the Wayne Police Department conducted a captivating drone demonstration at Pioneer Academy, engaging hundreds of students in an enlightening display of technology. The demonstration featured an 8-pound DJI Matrice 30T, which hovered 150 feet above the ground, allowing students to see their reflections on a TV monitor connected to the drone’s zoom camera. The event effectively illustrated the potential life-saving applications of drone technology, leaving a lasting impression on the young audience.

As part of the demonstration, a volunteer student simulated a distressed swimmer, showcasing how drones can assist in emergencies. The drone successfully delivered a life jacket to the student, emphasizing the importance of such technology in search-and-rescue operations. Sgt. Pawel Jadczak of the Wayne Police Department led the demonstration, explaining the various uses of drones in law enforcement, including traffic accident reconstruction and aiding in apprehending suspects.

STEM Activities and Student Engagement

The drone demonstration was part of a larger initiative at Pioneer Academy, a National Blue Ribbon-winning school located on Totowa Road. The school, which serves 448 students from pre-K through 12th grade, organized a week of STEM-related activities, including a mathematics competition and a science fair. Students also had the opportunity to visit the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, and attend a talk by a guest speaker from Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

The idea for the drone demonstration originated with Mela Kamara, an 11th-grade student who expressed the need for his peers to understand the diverse applications of drone technology. “I wanted to show them that there are other things you can do with drones,” said Mela, 16, from Bloomfield. His enthusiasm for the subject was evident, as he also founded a drone club at the school, which currently has 15 members. The club is actively building its own drones and plans to compete in a nationwide contest organized by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, a nonprofit based in Texas.

Future Perspectives on Drone Technology

Following the demonstration, Mela highlighted the positive aspects of drone technology. He stated, “You can do positive stuff with them. You can even have a future career with them.” This sentiment resonated with the students, many of whom were inspired to consider the potential career paths associated with drone technology. The event not only provided entertainment but also served as a vital educational experience, demonstrating the practical applications of drones in various fields.

The collaboration between the Wayne Police Department and Pioneer Academy reflects a commitment to fostering an interest in STEM education among young students. As technology continues to evolve, the integration of such demonstrations into educational curriculums may play a crucial role in preparing students for future careers in science and technology.
