Bozeman High’s volleyball team achieved a remarkable victory, defeating Gallatin High in a five-set match on Thursday, marking the first loss of the season for the Raptors. The match, held at Bozeman High’s Hawk Gym, concluded with set scores of 21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 28-26, and 15-12. This victory not only showcased Bozeman’s competitiveness but also set the stage for an exciting state tournament.
Despite entering the match with three losses, including a previous defeat to Gallatin on September 30, Bozeman proved to be a formidable opponent. The Raptors, who had maintained an undefeated record throughout the season, faced unexpected challenges as the Hawks mounted a reverse sweep.
Hawks head coach Devin Dynan attributed the team’s success to a newfound confidence. “I think it was more confidence in our team versus self-confidence,” Dynan remarked. “Having faith in the five people on the court and the bench made all the difference.”
The match unfolded dramatically, with Gallatin taking an early lead. The Raptors secured the first two sets, but Bozeman rallied in the following sets, demonstrating resilience and teamwork. The turning point came in the third set when the teams were tied at 23-23. A service error from Gallatin and an ace from Nula Anderson helped the Hawks claim their first set victory.
Anderson, who delivered a match-high 21 kills, expressed her excitement about performing under pressure. “That pressure is amazing,” she said. “It makes me a better player because my team supports me.”
Bozeman maintained momentum in the fourth set, where Anderson’s contributions were crucial. She secured three set points, leading the Hawks to a dramatic finish with a kill from Sophia Hagen and a Gallatin service error.
The decisive fifth set saw Bozeman take control early, establishing a 10-6 lead. Gallatin responded with a four-point streak to tie the match, but two attack errors allowed the Hawks to reach match point. Junior setter Maddy Johnson clinched the victory with a decisive kill. “She’s just an incredible athlete,” Dynan praised Johnson, who had transitioned to the setter position this season.
Throughout the match, Bozeman’s players showcased their skills beyond just scoring. Anderson contributed three blocks, while Johnson also recorded five kills, 14 assists, and 17 digs. Additionally, teammates Lowe leFeber and Taylor Johnson made significant contributions with 10 kills and 20 assists, respectively.
On the opposing side, Gallatin’s Makayla Coleman led with 14 kills, while Kennedy Varda and Miya Chase added 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Head coach Erika Gustavsen acknowledged the challenge posed by Bozeman and emphasized the importance of learning from the experience. “You have to give Bozeman credit; they played really well tonight. We view this as a good experience moving forward.”
Looking ahead, Gallatin remains focused on its goals for the upcoming state tournament, scheduled for November 12-14, 2023, at Montana State’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. Both teams will enter the tournament as top contenders, with Gallatin holding the Eastern AA No. 1 seed and Bozeman securing the No. 2 seed.
As the anticipation builds for the state meet, Anderson reflected on the excitement of competing against familiar rivals. “This game is super fun,” she stated. “You’re playing girls you’ve known for a long time, and it’s thrilling to face them on the net.”
With the stage set, both teams look forward to showcasing their talents as they vie for the championship title.
