Carlisle delivered an impressive performance on March 15, 2024, defeating Alvord 41-23 in the Class 2A-DI area championship game held in Ennis. The victory showcased a series of significant plays and momentum shifts that propelled Carlisle into the semi-finals of the regional playoffs.
“We’re one of the final four in the region and getting to practice on Thanksgiving, which is always a coach’s goal when the season starts,” said Carlisle’s head coach, Clay Baker. His pride in the team stems from their remarkable transformation, transitioning from a one-win season the previous year to a playoff contender that was not expected to advance.
With this win, Carlisle stands as the last remaining playoff team from District 8-2A, following other area round results where De Leon defeated Frankston 76-46, and Hamilton edged Mildred 27-14.
The game began on a high note for Carlisle, as quarterback Tony Ibarra took charge of the offense. Baker had emphasized the need for a strong passing game to counter Alvord’s formidable front seven. Ibarra delivered, completing a 10-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Mejia to kick off the scoring.
A 54-yard pass to Ivan Garza further solidified Carlisle’s early lead, setting the tone for the first half. Despite Alvord’s response with a touchdown run from Zane Fuentes, Carlisle struck back with a well-executed trick play. Mejia threw a touchdown pass to Garza, who then connected with Ibarra to extend their lead.
Just before halftime, Juan Diaz forced a fumble, which Mejia recovered, allowing Carlisle to secure a 37-yard field goal from Garza and a commanding 24-7 lead at the break.
The second half saw Carlisle maintain its momentum with a six-minute offensive drive culminating in a two-yard touchdown run by Elvis Hernandez. Carlisle’s defense continued to shine, with Jayden Nardozza tipping a pass that led to an interception by Garza, keeping Alvord at bay.
As the game progressed, Alvord mounted a late comeback attempt, with Fuentes breaking free for a 75-yard touchdown run. A successful onside kick allowed quarterback Dalton George to connect with Zane Smith for a 51-yard touchdown, narrowing the score to 34-23.
Despite the late surge from Alvord, Carlisle’s defense responded decisively. A forced fumble by Chase Roland and subsequent recovery by Diaz led to Ibarra’s one-yard touchdown run, sealing the victory. Defensive players like Maddox Henderson and Bryan Garza contributed to the solid performance, preventing any further scoring attempts from Alvord.
Baker highlighted the team’s timing and performance in recent games, stating, “We’re playing really, really good at the right time and catching fire.” With a record now at 7-5, Carlisle prepares to face Hamilton (10-2) in the Region 2 semi-final on March 22, 2024, at 15:00 at Corsicana High School.
This victory not only marks a significant achievement for Carlisle but also emphasizes the determination and resilience of a team that has defied expectations to reach this stage in the playoffs.
