Chico State Basketball Teams Secure Close Victories Over LA Rivals

The Chico State men’s and women’s basketball teams both achieved thrilling victories against Cal State Los Angeles on January 12, 2024, at Acker Gym in Chico, California. The women’s team improved its record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a narrow 60-57 win, while the men’s team triumphed 70-69, completing a second-half comeback.

In the women’s game, Chico State initially struggled, falling behind 9-2 within the first two minutes. However, the Wildcats quickly regained their footing, taking a 13-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. The team maintained a narrow advantage until midway through the third quarter when Cal State LA surged ahead, leading 53-46 entering the final period.

Chico State showcased resilience, outscoring their opponents 14-4 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. Madison Parry stood out with a stellar performance, contributing 21 points and securing 12 rebounds. Nseije Ortiz added 12 points, while Meadow Aragon recorded nine points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats dominated the boards, out-rebounding Cal State LA 45-30.

In the men’s contest, the Wildcats faced a challenging first half, trailing 45-38 at halftime. The team rallied in the second half, scoring 32 points to outpace Cal State LA. The decisive moment came when Jeremiah Dargan made a layup with nine seconds remaining, sealing the victory at 70-69. Dargan led the team with 23 points, while Chris Holley contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cortevious Taylor recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
