Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is ready to return to the field this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings after recovering from a dislocated left elbow that sidelined him for three games. Daniels, who was named the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, sustained the injury during Washington’s 38-14 home defeat to the Seattle Seahawks on November 2, 2023. Initial fears surrounding potential long-term damage were alleviated after medical tests confirmed that he had not incurred any significant structural harm.
In the lead-up to the game, Daniels participated in practice on a limited basis last week before fully returning on Thursday and Friday. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn praised Daniels’ performance during practice, stating that the quarterback “threw a great week of practice” and has been cleared to compete.
The current season has presented challenges for Washington, which has struggled significantly, now holding a record of 3-9 after losing seven consecutive games. This stands in stark contrast to the previous year when the team finished at 12-5 and advanced to the NFC Championship Game. Despite the team’s setbacks, Daniels expressed his eagerness to get back on the field. “I love this game. Before I was getting paid, I was playing for free,” he said. “I’m a young guy, still trying to grow, still trying to learn. These games are critical.”
In his six starts this season, Daniels has completed 62.5% of his passes, accumulating 1,184 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. He has also contributed on the ground, rushing for 262 yards and scoring two touchdowns on 54 carries.
Injuries have plagued the Commanders throughout the season, affecting both offensive and defensive units. Daniels has missed a total of six games due to knee, hamstring, and elbow injuries. His receiving corps has also been impacted, with wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown missing a combined 17 games. The trio has not played together since Week 2. McLaurin made a significant return in Washington’s recent overtime loss to the Denver Broncos, recording 96 yards and a touchdown, while Brown is expected to be activated off injured reserve following a groin injury.
With the midseason return of right guard Sam Cosmi from ACL surgery, the Commanders will have their anticipated starting offense intact, with the exception of running back Austin Ekeler, who is recovering from an Achilles injury. “It will be great to have the whole band back together,” Daniels remarked.
On the defensive side, the Commanders have placed four starters on injured reserve this season. Notably, 11-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner is expected to play against the Vikings despite having missed practice time this week due to a knee issue.
As Washington prepares for the matchup, the return of Daniels may provide a much-needed boost to a struggling team eager to turn its fortunes around.
