In March 2025, Jacob Laverman celebrated an extraordinary career milestone as he played a pivotal role in Indiana University’s victory at the Big Ten Championship Game. Laverman’s journey from a farm in Ocheyedan, Iowa, to the sidelines of major college football exemplifies the impact of hard work, mentorship, and resilience in the face of uncertainty.
Growing up on a farm, Laverman learned early that hard work was essential. Chores were a daily reality, reinforcing the mindset that achieving success requires dedication. After graduating high school, uncertainty loomed over his future. Seeking clarity, Laverman enrolled at Minnesota West Community & Technical College, drawn by its affordability and the opportunity to explore various interests. “I submitted my Minnesota West application on the very last day it was due—and somehow, everything fell into place just as it was meant to,” he remarked.
Laverman found more than just an academic path at Minnesota West. He participated in sports, including one year of golf and two years of baseball, while earning an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. The supportive environment, with small class sizes and engaged professors, allowed him to flourish. Mentors like Joel Krekelberg, who taught courses in Sports Injuries and Athletic Training, ignited his interest in sports medicine.
“My first college experience had the support systems in place and made it easy to succeed,” Laverman said. “When it came time to move on to a four-year university, I felt fully prepared for that next step.” With encouragement from coaches and advisors, he identified Iowa State University as the ideal institution for his aspirations in Athletic Training.
During his first year at Iowa State in 2012, Laverman gained invaluable experience working with college football teams. He proactively sought summer internships, ultimately landing an opportunity with the Indianapolis Colts after reaching out to all 32 NFL teams. This connection was made possible by Iowa State’s robust network, which later helped him secure a position with the Seattle Seahawks in 2016.
“My time with the Colts inspired me to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree,” he stated, reflecting on the influence of Erin Barill, the Colts’ Director of Rehabilitation. With guidance from advisor Mary Meier, Laverman applied to the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, where he was accepted into one of the nation’s top physical therapy programs.
As he approached graduation, Laverman’s journey came full circle when he took on a seasonal role as a physical therapist and athletic trainer for the Colts in 2018. The experiences he accrued positioned him well for his current role as the Director of Football Rehabilitation and Assistant Athletic Trainer at Indiana University, where he has now spent seven seasons.
Laverman’s impact extends beyond the field. He has worked with elite quarterbacks, including Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson, and he expresses admiration for current Indiana players like Fernando Mendoza, noting his dedication and professionalism. “He exemplifies the ‘first one in, last one out’ mentality,” Laverman said, praising Mendoza’s commitment to his craft.
The culmination of Laverman’s efforts came during the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Celebrating with family, he reflected on the significance of the moment. “Sharing success with those who have sacrificed so much for me is what it’s all about,” he said, cherishing a jar of confetti as a reminder of that achievement.
Laverman’s story illustrates a powerful truth: hard work combined with meaningful relationships can open doors to incredible opportunities. He encourages others to remain open-minded and to invest in building their networks. “Take time to look at your options and talk to trusted advisors,” he advised. “Once you pick a path, go all in.”
As a first-generation college graduate, Laverman’s agricultural roots instilled in him the value of perseverance. He acknowledges the demanding nature of his profession, which requires focus and commitment. “This job is fast-paced and high-pressure,” he noted, emphasizing the need to consistently perform at a high level.
Ultimately, Laverman’s career embodies the intersection of passion, perseverance, and purpose. Every step of his journey has contributed to his growth, and he continues to inspire others in the field of sports medicine.
