Laurie Canter Signs with LIV Golf, Leaving PGA Tour Behind

Laurie Canter has officially joined LIV Golf for the second time, turning down his PGA Tour card. The Saudi-backed league announced on Monday that Canter will be part of the Majestiks Golf Club for the 2026 season. This decision comes after he finished in seventh place in the Race to Dubai, earning a chance to compete on the PGA Tour alongside nine other players from the European Tour. By aligning with LIV Golf, Canter is now suspended from the PGA Tour, and his card will be transferred to Daniel Brown.

In a statement, Canter expressed enthusiasm for his new role: “Joining Majesticks GC is an incredible opportunity to be part of a team that has helped shape LIV Golf from day one.” The 36-year-old golfer from England had a unique journey when LIV Golf launched in 2022. At that time, he held limited status on the European Tour and opted to join the Saudi-backed league to secure competitive opportunities. He participated in the inaugural season, playing seven events and finishing 28th in the standings.

Canter’s Return and Recent Achievements

In 2023, Canter was a reserve player, stepping in for injured competitors and participating in 11 tournaments with LIV Golf. The start of 2024 saw him play as a reserve in two events before being replaced by Anthony Kim. Canter then returned to the European Tour, where he claimed victory at the European Open in Germany, further establishing his presence in professional golf. His win in Bahrain in early 2025 propelled him to 50th in the world rankings, granting him entry into The Players Championship, making him the first former LIV player to compete in this prestigious tournament. He also qualified for the Masters.

Canter’s move to LIV Golf aligns him with other notable players, including Victor Perez from France. The Majestiks, an English-based team, originally featured prominent golfers such as Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, and Sam Horsfield. Stenson’s inability to finish in the top 48 this year led to his relegation, opening a spot for Canter.

Reflecting on his experience, Canter noted, “The league’s growth has been remarkable, and my experience in the league has led me to become a more complete player and a multiple winner on the DP World Tour.” He expressed pride in his return to the Majestiks, emphasizing their standard of excellence, ambition, and distinct identity that resonates with him.

Last year, Tom McKibbin earned a PGA Tour card through the European Tour and subsequently joined LIV Golf in January. Due to the timing of the season’s start, McKibbin’s card was not passed to the next player in line. However, as Canter signed with LIV Golf before the end of the year, Brown is eligible to accept his PGA Tour card.

As LIV Golf continues to evolve, Canter’s decision reflects the shifting landscape of professional golf and the growing appeal of the league for players seeking new opportunities.
