The Lewis County High School wrestling team achieved notable success by securing third place at the annual McFly Outdoor Invitational held last weekend. The event, which had been hosted in the Lewis County High School gymnasium for several years, was relocated to the Battler Center at the now-closed Alderson Broaddus College due to increased participation.
Competing against a strong field, the Minutemen finished the Friday night portion of the tournament with an impressive team record of 4-1. They claimed victories over teams from Doddridge, Gilmer, Nicholas, and Lincoln, with their only defeat coming at the hands of St. Mary’s High School. Ultimately, Lewis County placed behind the champions, St. Mary’s, and second-place Fairmont Senior High School.
Individual Performances Highlight Team Success
The standout performer for Lewis County was Landon Bush, who emerged as the lone champion for the team. Bush went undefeated throughout the event, capturing the top prize in the 150-pound weight class.
Two freshmen also made significant contributions to the team’s overall performance. Landry Cogar finished second in the 175-pound class, while Zeke Brown secured a runner-up position in the 132-pound class. Other notable finishes included Alek Bragg, who took third in the 106-pound weight class, and Boe Alton, who finished in sixth place.
In addition to these placements, several other wrestlers from Lewis County also made their mark. Wyatt Hurley (113 pounds), William Hovis (157 pounds), and Alex Nash-Musgrave (285 pounds) each finished in third place, while Raigyn Marti took fourth in the girls division. Bruce Rohrbough Jr. (138 pounds), Blake Watson (165 pounds), and Jaxon Butcher (190 pounds) rounded out the team’s successful outing by all finishing in fifth place.
The tournament was sponsored by McFly Outdoor, Mountaineer Specialty, and Kaufman Realty and Auctions, indicating strong community support for the event.
The performances at the McFly Outdoor Invitational not only reflect the hard work and commitment of the Lewis County wrestling team but also set a positive tone for the remainder of the season. As the team builds on this success, the Minutemen will look to continue their momentum in upcoming competitions.
