Pittsburgh International Airport Unveils $1.7 Billion Terminal

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) officially opens its new terminal on Tuesday, marking a significant upgrade in passenger experience. Starting at 2 a.m. on opening day, travelers will no longer need to rely on the tram to access their gates. The new $1.7 billion landside terminal features high ceilings and a streamlined design that allows for a short walk to the gates after passing through security.

For the anticipated 25,000 passengers flying in and out on the first day, the new terminal promises to enhance the overall travel experience. Here’s what to expect during this transition.

Accessing the Airport

The route to the airport remains unchanged from I-376, but drivers will notice new signage guiding them to the new terminal. The previous roads leading to the old terminal have been closed and barricaded. Upon entering the airport grounds, drivers are advised to bear right instead of left to follow the new signs for passenger drop-off and pick-up.

A new “wait lot” is available for drivers picking up travelers, allowing them to park for free for the first hour. Airport employees, identifiable by their high-visibility purple vests, will be present throughout the roads and parking areas to assist travelers acclimating to the new layout.

Parking Options

Travelers have several parking options at the airport, including the new Terminal Garage, Terminal Lot, and Shuttle Lot.

The Terminal Garage, a five-story structure with 3,300 parking spaces, is conveniently located next to the new terminal. Each floor features signs indicating available spots, with green overhead lights marking open spaces. Parking in the garage is priced at $35 per day, but those who reserve their spots online at parkatpit.com can secure rates as low as $30 per day.

The new 2,800-space Terminal Lot, situated adjacent to the garage, offers daily parking for $25, with discounted rates starting at $19 for online bookings. For visitors seeking a more economical option, the Shuttle Lot, which comprises the former Economy, Long Term, and Extended lots, provides parking for $12 per day, with advance booking rates as low as $8. Shuttle buses, now in service with enhanced seating and space, will transport passengers to the new terminal in approximately 10 minutes.

Terminal Features and Enhancements

Upon arrival at the new terminal, travelers can expect a streamlined security process. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will operate 12 lanes equipped with advanced scanning technology. Passengers will enjoy conveniences such as keeping their shoes on, laptops in their bags, and liquids sealed in their containers while proceeding through security.

After clearing security, passengers will walk over a bridge into a tunnel that leads to a spacious great hall, designed to evoke the experience of emerging from the Fort Pitt Tunnel into the city. Additional upgrades include outdoor terraces, a new baggage system that significantly reduces travel distance, and various art displays and installations throughout the terminal.

The first flight from the new terminal is scheduled to depart at approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a new era for Pittsburgh International Airport. As travelers explore this state-of-the-art facility, the focus remains on enhancing convenience, accessibility, and overall passenger satisfaction.
