In a notable achievement for the sport, Rafael Suarez-Abraham, a junior goalie from Soquel High School, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) for the 2025 season. His selection marks a rare recognition for a goalkeeper, often overshadowed by high-scoring attackers.
Suarez-Abraham’s exceptional performance contributed significantly to the Knights’ success this season. He played a pivotal role in leading Soquel to a league title and securing a place in the CCS Open Division playoffs. The Knights finished the season with an impressive record of 23-6, demonstrating their prowess in the league, where they remained undefeated at 4-0.
Outstanding Performance on the Field
Throughout the season, Suarez-Abraham exhibited remarkable skills, averaging 8.5 saves per match. In a total of 28 games, he made 238 saves and maintained an 8.5 goals-against average. His ability to perform under pressure was highlighted in key matches, particularly against formidable opponents such as Sacred Heart Prep and Campolindo, where he successfully blocked critical penalty shots.
“The thing that impressed me most was how good he was in our biggest games,” said Ryan Chapatte, Soquel’s coach and recently named SCCAL Coach of the Year. “We’re not keeping those games close without him making those impressive saves.”
Chapatte praised Suarez-Abraham for his instincts and fearlessness in the goal, stating that he not only stops expected shots but also manages to block many that seem nearly impossible. This level of skill and determination has made him a standout player in the league.
Recognition and Team Achievements
In addition to his MVP accolade, Suarez-Abraham was also selected for the first-team all-CCS (Central Coast Section), further affirming his status as one of the league’s top athletes. His brother, Gabe Suarez-Abraham, also earned first-team honors, showcasing the family’s dedication to the sport. Alongside them, teammate Stryder Stelck was recognized for his outstanding contributions, leading the team with 81 goals, along with notable assists and steals throughout the season.
The recognition extended to other schools within the league, with Santa Cruz High also having three players named to the first team, including senior attacker Hayden Johnson, who led his team with 95 goals. The performance of these athletes underscored the competitive nature of the SCCAL.
Overall, the 2025 season proved to be a landmark year for Soquel High water polo, with Suarez-Abraham’s exceptional goalkeeping at the forefront of their achievements. His performance not only helped his team reach the semifinals of the CCS Open Division but also paved the way for their qualification for the CIF Division I NorCal Regional playoffs.
As the season concludes, the impact of Suarez-Abraham’s talent and dedication to the sport leaves a lasting impression on teammates, coaches, and competitors alike.
