Te’Sean Smoot Leads Alabama State to 44-13 Victory Over UAPB

In a commanding performance, Te’Sean Smoot threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns, leading Alabama State to a decisive 44-13 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday night. The win marks the Hornets’ ninth victory of the season, equaling the program’s best record since 1935.

Smoot showcased his versatility by connecting with four different receivers for touchdowns, while Marcus Harris II contributed significantly with a 50-yard touchdown run. As Alabama State approaches the end of the regular season, they look to build momentum with a two-game homestand.

Alabama State had a strong start to the game, but UAPB struck first, scoring on their opening drive. Despite the initial setback, Alabama State’s defense tightened, allowing UAPB only one more score until late in the third quarter, when they managed to get within 30-13 with just under three minutes remaining in the period.

In response, Smoot demonstrated his leadership by throwing two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. He completed a 10-yard pass to Manny Thompson and followed it with a 26-yard strike to Asa Gregg. Additionally, Andrew Abu-Akel successfully kicked field goals from 24, 33, and 43 yards, rounding out the scoring for Alabama State.

The Hornets’ victory comes on the heels of a dominant performance against Mississippi Valley State, where they won 41-3. Alabama State is now eyeing a crucial game against Tuskegee to conclude the regular season.

To host the upcoming conference championship game on December 6, 2023, Alabama State needed both a win and a loss from Jackson State. Unfortunately for the Hornets, Jackson State secured a 27-21 victory over Alcorn State, complicating Alabama’s path to the championship.

As the regular season draws to a close, Alabama State’s achievement of nine wins highlights a significant milestone in the program’s history and sets up a promising future for the team as they prepare for their final matchup against Tuskegee.
