Wrestling Teams Gear Up for 2025-26 Season on the Front Range

As the 2025-26 wrestling season approaches, teams across the Front Range are preparing for a competitive year. With several programs looking to build on last year’s performances, expectations are high for both boys’ and girls’ teams. Many athletes are returning as seasoned competitors, aiming to make their mark at the state tournament.

Boys’ Class 5A Highlights

The Broomfield Eagles, coached by Jimmy Zechmann, qualified eight wrestlers for the 5A state tournament last season, placing 16th overall. This year, they aim to improve their standing. “We are returning six state qualifiers and hope to build upon our league runner-up finish,” Zechmann stated. Key wrestlers include Senior Nick Penfold (157 lbs, ranked No. 4) and Junior Asher Diamond (132 lbs, ranked No. 6). The Eagles are targeting a top 10 finish at the state tournament scheduled for February 2026.

The Boulder Panthers finished last season with two alternates for the state tournament. Coach William Leboeuf highlighted the leadership of Senior Isaac Wing (165 lbs, ranked No. 13) and Senior Alex Smith (190 lbs) as pivotal for the team’s success this year. With a strong offseason training program, the Panthers are optimistic about their chances.

Under the guidance of coach Arturo Mata, the Centaurus Warriors are focused on hard work and teamwork. After qualifying two wrestlers last year, they look to improve with returning athletes such as Aaron Aldama (190 lbs) and Carson Thomas (150 lbs). “We have a team that is all in on hard work,” Mata affirmed.

The Erie Tigers, led by coach Joe Ferrera, qualified eight wrestlers last season, placing 10th overall. They are looking to build on their performance with returning state qualifiers like Senior Tyler Muir (157 lbs, ranked No. 6) and Senior Wyatt Walston (285 lbs, ranked No. 3).

Meanwhile, the Fairview Knights hope for improvement under new coach Marcus May. Last season, the Knights qualified one wrestler for state and placed 42nd. Senior Peyton Pacheco returns to compete at 190 lbs, bringing experience to the team.

The Legacy Lightning have a strong contender in Senior Matthew Clifton, who placed third in the 132-pound class last year. Coach Michael Thompson is optimistic about his returning wrestlers and their potential to excel this season.

Girls’ Class 5A Spotlight

On the girls’ side, the Broomfield Eagles, coached by Luci Schement, are coming off a successful season that saw them qualify five wrestlers for the state tournament, including a state champion. Junior Shayla Martinez is a standout competitor, ranked No. 1 in the 190-pound category after a stellar performance at the national level.

The Mead Mavericks are also looking to make a mark this season, with coach Jared Wells focusing on the return of Senior Morgan McDonald. After missing last year due to injury, she aims for a strong comeback. Alongside returning state qualifiers, the Mavericks expect a competitive season.

The Holy Family Tigers are optimistic as they prepare for their third year as a program. Coaches Ernie Derrera and Joe Malanga have seen growth in their team, with eight wrestlers qualifying for the 4A state tournament last year. Sophomore Veronika Hafer and Junior Breezy Johnston, a transfer from Broomfield, are poised to lead the team.

As the season progresses, each team will be looking to harness their strengths and refine their techniques in hopes of achieving success at the state level. With a mix of experienced wrestlers and fresh talent, the Front Range wrestling community is set for an exciting year ahead.
