Zeke Andrews Leads Ralston Valley to Historic State Title Game

The Ralston Valley Mustangs are set to make their first appearance in a state championship game, largely thanks to their dynamic quarterback, Zeke Andrews. The Mustangs will face the formidable Cherry Creek Bruins on Saturday in Fort Collins, marking a significant milestone for the program.

Andrews has been pivotal in leading Ralston Valley (13-0) through a challenging season. His performance during a non-conference matchup against Valor Christian on September 26 exemplified his determination. With the Mustangs at the six-yard line, Andrews evaded a linebacker blitz, maneuvered past a defensive lineman, and powered through another linebacker to score a touchdown. This play not only showcased his athleticism but also symbolized the team’s resilience.

Overcoming Adversity

Head coach Jared Yannacito highlighted Andrews’ impact, stating, “When Zeke ran that linebacker over into the end zone, that play summarized the kind of work he’s put in over the last two years as a starter.” The Mustangs have adopted the mantra “keep punching,” which reflects their journey after narrowly missing the championship in previous seasons.

In 2022 and 2023, the Mustangs faced heartbreak in the semifinals, losing to Valor Christian by a single point in double overtime and falling to Cherry Creek by just seven points. Last year, Andrews, then a first-year starter, led the team to a league title but was eliminated in the quarterfinals. This season, however, the Mustangs have persevered, demonstrating a strong team spirit despite various setbacks.

After suffering a season-ending injury to junior running back Colton Stratman in Week 1, the team adapted. Junior Sawyer Blomquist stepped in effectively as the starting running back. Additionally, when Andrews lacerated his kidney on October 16 against Columbine, junior Logan Gabler took charge, leading the Mustangs to dominating wins against Denver East and Arvada West, scoring a combined total of 97 points.

A Strong Team Dynamic

The Mustangs faced their first significant challenge in the semifinals against Mountain Vista, falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter. However, they rallied to secure a 31-28 victory with a last-second field goal by Landon Plichta. This resilience has been a hallmark of the team, with junior wide receiver Levi Rillos noting Andrews’ leadership as a vital force, stating, “He’s always been a role model to other players… He’s keeping the morale up on the sideline.”

Andrews has not only excelled as a leader on the field but also as a formidable quarterback. This season, he has thrown for 2,618 yards, recording 25 touchdowns against just three interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed for 749 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. His ability to evade pressure and extend plays has made him a focal point of the Mustangs’ offense, drawing attention from opposing coaches.

Cherry Creek head coach Dave Logan acknowledged the challenge Andrews presents, noting, “He can throw it with accuracy, he’s an excellent athlete, he’s tough. He makes that offense go.” Logan’s team has won multiple state championships, and they recognize that stopping Andrews is crucial to their success.

As the championship game approaches, Andrews is also navigating his future. He recently de-committed from Colorado State after a conversation with new head coach Jim Mora, who indicated that the current system might not be the best fit for Andrews. This decision places additional pressure on him to prove himself in the championship while also considering his next steps for college football.

Despite the uncertainties, the Mustangs aim to remain true to their identity as they prepare to face Cherry Creek. Rillos emphasized the team’s commitment to their game plan, stating, “We just need to be who we are, and play how we’ve been playing to get here.” With Andrews leading the charge, Ralston Valley seeks to write a new chapter in their football history.
