22-Year-Old Charged with Murder After Fatal Shooting in Indy

UPDATE: A 22-year-old Camby man, identified as Keymaree Fagin, is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting and killing 21-year-old Logan Allen Newman on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The incident unfolded around noon on December 23, 2023, when the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received reports of shots fired and a vehicle crash.

When officers arrived at the scene in the 8700 block of Blooming Grove Drive, they discovered Newman critically injured in a vehicle in the 8900 block of Belle Union Drive. Despite immediate medical assistance, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported that Fagin fled the area following the shooting, prompting a swift response from IMPD, who deployed drones and K-9 units.

Just before 1 p.m., authorities announced they had apprehended Fagin nearby in the 8600 block of Belle Union Place. He has been charged with murder, unlawful carrying of a handgun due to a prior felony conviction, and pointing a firearm at another person.

Court documents reveal disturbing details about the events leading to the shooting. Witnesses stated that Fagin had been in the car with Newman and another passenger, where he displayed a firearm, boasting about having stolen it. Tensions escalated when Fagin allegedly accused Newman of disrespecting his child, leading to a confrontation. According to the witness, Fagin threatened Newman directly, stating, “No, I’m going to shoot you,” before firing multiple shots at close range.

The emotional weight of this incident resonates deeply within the community. Witnesses described the chaotic scene as the vehicle crashed into park fencing, with Newman slumping over while still pressing the gas pedal. The surviving passenger managed to steer the car to safety, but the trauma of the event remains palpable.

In an interview, Fagin denied his involvement, claiming he was unaware of the shooting and asserting that he did not possess a firearm. However, evidence collected at the scene contradicts his statements, with police noting two bullet strikes to the windshield consistent with shots fired from inside the vehicle.

The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting concerns about gun violence and the safety of the community. Indianapolis leaders are calling for action to address escalating violence, emphasizing the need for change to prevent future tragedies.

Fagin’s initial hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 6, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. as the investigation continues. Authorities are urging anyone with more information to come forward to assist in bringing clarity to this shocking event.

The urgency of this case underscores the critical need for ongoing dialogue and action regarding gun safety and violence prevention in Indianapolis and beyond. As more details emerge, the community watches closely for justice and healing in the wake of this heartbreak.
