BREAKING: Aptos High sophomore Kiana Safari has clinched the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) singles championship, decisively defeating Aila Papadopoulos of Scotts Valley High with a score of 6-2, 6-0 at Imperial Courts on Thursday. This victory marks Safari’s second consecutive title, solidifying her reputation as one of the league’s top talents.
In a match that unfolded swiftly, Safari showcased her skills after extensive summer training at the No Quit Tennis Academy in Las Vegas. Papadopoulos aimed to leverage her height advantage by keeping Safari on the move, but the Aptos standout was prepared for the challenge. “It was pretty fun,” Safari remarked. “We both played really well. There were a lot of really close games.” Her preparation paid off, as she rolled into the finals with two previous victories by double bagels.
Safari, now boasting a 19-3 record over her two-year varsity career, has earned a spot in the upcoming Central Coast Section (CCS) Singles Tournament on November 17 and 19 at Bay Club Courtside in Los Gatos. She expressed her motivation, saying, “I wanted to get into CCS,” especially after a challenging first-round exit last season due to injury.
Papadopoulos, competing just hours before her volleyball team’s CCS semifinals, demonstrated remarkable endurance throughout the day. Despite suffering a fractured elbow earlier this season, she pushed through to compete and improve her game. “It’s been super hard,” she stated, revealing her goal of attending a UC school.
In doubles action, Santa Cruz High’s Francesca Garces and Julia Kennedy triumphed over Aptos twins Isabella and Natalia Calderon with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory, ensuring their advancement in the playoffs.
As she prepares for the CCS Singles Tournament, Safari noted her growth, both physically and in her game strategy, thanks to rigorous training. She reflected, “I have stronger legs and hips. I can put more of my body into my shot.” This improvement was recognized by Papadopoulos, who acknowledged, “She’s such a powerful player.”
With the Mariners finishing the season with a 10-2 overall record and 10-0 in league play, they are set to compete in the CCS Team Tournament on Monday at 2 p.m. The seeding meeting on Saturday morning will determine their opponent.
Safari’s victory not only underscores her hard work but also sets the stage for her aspirations in the CCS, where she aims to advance beyond her previous limitations. “Redemption,” she said, as she looks forward to making a deeper run this year.
As the tennis season progresses, both Safari and Papadopoulos remain key figures in their respective sports, exemplifying resilience and dedication that resonates beyond the court.
