UPDATE: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has just announced progress on a crucial $8.5 billion critical minerals deal with the United States amid rising tensions with China. This significant development occurred during a bilateral meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 23, 2023, during the ASEAN summit.
Albanese characterized the meeting as “positive,” marking his seventh discussion with Li, which he stated reflects a stabilizing relationship between Australia and China. “This is a relationship that has improved; that is stabilizing,” he told reporters, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The Australian Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the minerals deal, as the U.S. seeks to secure supply chains for rare earth elements at a time when China is tightening its own export regulations. “We talked about the relationship with the U.S. I clearly have indicated the success of my visit to the United States,” Albanese stated, referring to his recent discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“China hopes Australia will provide an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese enterprises,” Li told Albanese, according to Xinhua.
However, the meeting was not without its contentious moments. Albanese also addressed the alarming behavior of a Chinese fighter jet during an incident on October 19, where a Chinese Su-35 jet dangerously approached an Australian P-8 Poseidon aircraft in the South China Sea. The Australian Defense Minister described the Chinese actions as “unsafe and unprofessional,” prompting an official protest from Australia.
Li Jianjian, a senior spokesperson for the Chinese military, accused Australia of violating China’s sovereignty. “The actions of the Australian side seriously violated China’s sovereignty and could easily trigger unexpected maritime or aerial incidents,” he asserted.
Albanese stated he made it clear to Li that the incident was a significant concern for Australia, underscoring the need for open discussions even amid disagreements. “We have disagreements and friends are able to discuss issues frankly,” he asserted, indicating a commitment to addressing bilateral tensions directly.
In a broader context, Australia has been vigilant regarding China’s growing influence and military maneuvers in the region. Earlier this year, Albanese raised concerns about a previous confrontation involving Chinese military exercises near Australian airspace, demonstrating the ongoing need for dialogue as geopolitical tensions rise.
Going forward, observers will be watching closely for further developments in the Australia-China relationship, particularly concerning trade policies and military interactions. The recent engagement signals a potential pathway to easing tensions, but the outcome remains uncertain.
