UPDATE: Bemidji State University’s inaugural Monster Mash Beaver Bash has turned into an exciting success, attracting over 300 trick-or-treaters in just the first half-hour on the evening of October 31, 2023. The event, hosted at the John Glas Fieldhouse, offered a centralized location for Halloween festivities, making it easier for families to enjoy the celebrations without worrying about dark or chilly conditions outside.
Organized by BSU Housing and Residential Life, the event replaced the traditional trick-or-treating at the residence halls. “The energy level has been really high,” said Jonathan Dietz, director of housing and residential life. “We’ve seen a really, really large traffic already, indicating a large success.” Attendees began arriving 15 to 30 minutes early, eager to partake in the Halloween-themed fun.
The event featured a variety of activities hosted by around a dozen student organizations, offering games and treats while providing a safe haven from rainy weather. “We’ve got students from a lot of different clubs and organizations,” Dietz noted, highlighting the massive involvement of student volunteers, with 90% of helpers being non-staff members.
At one entrance, student volunteers Shelby Thyssen and Emma Ostrowski reported greeting well over 300 kids in the first 30 minutes. Activities included pumpkin tic-tac-toe, giant Jenga, and bowling, with candy and prizes waiting for the costumed participants. Even Bucky the Beaver made an appearance, posing for pictures with the young revelers.
Dietz expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from both staff and student residents, stating, “It’s so fun to see our student community come out and really engage with everyone.” The event not only provided a safe space for children to celebrate Halloween but also fostered a sense of community within the university.
As trick-or-treaters continue to fill the fieldhouse, the success of the Monster Mash Beaver Bash sets a positive precedent for future events at Bemidji State. Parents and families can look forward to more community-centered gatherings that enhance the Halloween spirit while ensuring safety and accessibility for all.
