Bob Lehman has been appointed the new executive director of San Diego ART Matters, a leading arts advocacy organization in San Diego, effective immediately. Lehman, who has led the San Diego Museum Council since 2021, steps into this prominent role at a time when the organization aims to expand its influence and advocacy for the arts across the region.
Background and Evolution of San Diego ART Matters
Founded in 1989 as the San Diego Regional Arts and Culture Coalition, the organization was initially established to challenge proposed cuts to arts funding derived from the city’s hotel tax. Over the years, it has evolved into a significant voice for arts advocacy not only in California but also on the national stage, collaborating with California Arts Advocates and Americans for the Arts on various issues.
In 2024, the organization rebranded to become San Diego ART Matters, reflecting its commitment to championing the arts and culture sector. Lehman’s leadership at the museum council during the pandemic showcased his ability to advocate effectively for the arts, increasing membership and visibility for the council.
Lehman’s Vision and Goals for the Future
Lehman brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as the executive director of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, where he served from 2013 to 2019. His tenure at the San Diego Museum Council was marked by a significant increase in membership, which tripled to over 100 arts organizations. He also emphasized collaboration with cultural institutions across the border.
In his new position, Lehman expressed his desire to foster a strong partnership between San Diego ART Matters and the San Diego Museum Council, stating, “Especially in today’s difficult climate, we need to work together, collaborate, and share resources.” He emphasized that collaboration is crucial for long-term success, aiming to set a precedent for future partnerships in the San Diego region.
With the transition, Tom Felkner, the council’s director of operations, will manage the day-to-day activities of the San Diego Museum Council while reporting to its board of directors.
At San Diego ART Matters, Lehman will focus on advocating for funding and shaping policies that impact the artistic landscape of San Diego County. A key priority will be addressing the needs of artists and arts organizations in underserved and rural communities.
Felicia Shaw, the deputy director for San Diego ART Matters, noted the seamless transition, stating, “Bob and I are already connected at the hip in so much of our work,” referencing their collaborative roles in statewide organizations. She emphasized that Lehman’s leadership represents a natural fit for the organization.
James Halliday, interim chair of San Diego ART Matters, highlighted the significance of Lehman’s appointment, saying, “Hiring Bob is a major win for our arts and culture community.” His passion and determination are expected to drive the organization forward, building on the momentum gained in recent years.
Lehman expressed enthusiasm for his new role, aiming to establish San Diego ART Matters as a unified voice for the region’s arts and culture community. He stated, “My immediate focus is to help expand access to funding, elevate the voices of our cultural workers, and build the shared infrastructure that allows our creative sector to grow.”
With a diverse array of cultural assets, from tribal museums to major institutions, Lehman is determined to ensure that all arts organizations, particularly those lacking adequate resources, receive the support necessary for sustainable growth. His leadership is poised to make a significant impact on the artistic landscape of San Diego County.
