UPDATE: The fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs clinched a crucial 3-1 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in a gripping NCHC showdown at Amsoil Arena on December 15, 2023. This win marks the Bulldogs’ impressive 10-0 record in series openers on Friday nights this season.
In a match defined by resilience, the Bulldogs successfully navigated a challenging situation with just over six minutes left on the clock, killing off a major penalty that could have shifted the game’s momentum. Sophomore wing Max Plante, currently the nation’s leading scorer with 29 points, along with senior center Kyle Gaffney and freshman wing Daniel Shlaine, secured goals for Minnesota Duluth (14-5 overall, 7-3 NCHC).
Bulldogs sophomore goaltender Adam Gajan showcased a stellar performance, making 16 saves and limiting the Sun Devils to just 17 shots on goal throughout the game. Despite facing a five-minute major power play, Arizona State (7-9-1, 3-5-1) managed only five shots in the final period, reflecting the Bulldogs’ defensive prowess.
In a significant moment, the game also marked Scott Sandelin’s 1,000th game as head coach of the Bulldogs, making him the first coach in UMD history to reach this milestone and the 27th in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey to achieve this feat.
“It’s a huge honor to reach this milestone,” Sandelin stated during a pre-game ceremony. “But tonight’s win is what truly matters.”
However, the game took a concerning turn when Arizona State junior captain Kyle Smolen was injured following a heavy hit from Bulldogs defenseman Adam Kleber, leading to a five-minute power play for the Sun Devils. Kleber was assessed an interference major, but Minnesota Duluth’s defense held firm, culminating in an empty-net goal from Shlaine just as Kleber returned to the ice.
The Bulldogs’ offensive strategy was notably effective, with Gaffney scoring his first goal as a Bulldog after a line adjustment that included moving sophomore forward Callum Arnott to center. The new line configuration paid off as Arnott assisted Gaffney’s goal, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead late in the second period.
Plante also continued to shine on the power play, scoring through a well-executed play that mirrored their recent success against Western Michigan. This marked the Bulldogs’ fourth power play goal in their last five attempts, showcasing their growing offensive momentum.
The Sun Devils initially took the lead with a goal from sophomore wing Ty Nash, who capitalized on a 2-on-1 rush late in the first period. Despite a strong start, Arizona State struggled to maintain pressure, ultimately yielding to Minnesota Duluth’s defensive strategy.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will face Arizona State again at 5 p.m. on December 16, 2023, for the final game of the year before a two-week holiday break. Minnesota Duluth will return to Amsoil Arena on January 2 for an exhibition against Manitoba.
This victory not only reinforces the Bulldogs’ position in the NCHC standings but also highlights their potential as a formidable contender this season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the season progresses.
