CC Sabathia Honored with Key to Vallejo on “Sabathia Day”

UPDATE: CC Sabathia, the newly inducted Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, received a monumental honor today as Vallejo celebrated “CC Sabathia Day.” The ceremony, held at Corbus Field on July 23, 2023, marked a significant tribute to the Vallejo native and his contributions to the community over the past two decades.

As rain paused for a brief moment, the “power couple” of CC and his wife, Amber Sabathia, were presented with the key to the city and various proclamations. In a heartfelt gesture, Gateway Drive in North Vallejo was officially renamed “CC Sabathia Way,” solidifying his legacy in his hometown.

This event comes just months after Sabathia made history as the first athlete from Vallejo to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The ceremony was a collaborative effort between the city and Sabathia’s PitCCh-In Foundation, which has been instrumental in providing support to local youth.

In his emotional speech, Sabathia reflected on the inspiration he found in local figures like Demetrius Davis, a Vallejo native who passed away in 2012. “I think about him every single day,” Sabathia said, fighting back tears. “I just want to say thank you to everyone in this community.”

The day included a free baseball clinic for kids, reinforcing Sabathia’s commitment to empowering the next generation. Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce praised Sabathia, stating, “The story of CC Sabathia is the story of Vallejo. You represent our heart and resilience.”

Attendees included former coaches and local dignitaries, all expressing gratitude for the couple’s unwavering support for Vallejo. “What they do for this community is unheard of,” said local resident Jomar Connors. “They do it out of pure love, not for recognition.”

With a career boasting 251 wins, over 3,000 strikeouts, and a 2009 World Series title with the New York Yankees, Sabathia’s impact on baseball is undeniable. However, his contributions off the field through education and community support may be even more significant.

Resolutions from state and local officials were presented, including California Assemblymember Lori Wilson and Solano County Supervisor Cassandra James, highlighting the couple’s charitable work. Sabathia’s PitCCh-In Foundation continues to provide backpacks and school supplies to Vallejo students each year, reinforcing the couple’s commitment to education.

As the event wrapped up, Sabathia expressed his love for Vallejo, saying he always returns for the community and cherished local spots. “I always go back to my house in the crest,” he remarked.

This heartfelt ceremony not only celebrated CC Sabathia’s illustrious career but also his deep-rooted connection to Vallejo, reminding everyone of the impact one individual can have on a community.
