UPDATE: The College of the Canyons Cougars exploded for a remarkable 6-2 victory over Citrus College on November 3, 2023, during their annual Sophomore Night. This decisive win marks a season-high for goals and significantly boosts the Cougars’ morale as they conclude their home season.
In a thrilling display of skill, the Cougars (5-11-3, 3-6) showcased their offensive prowess at home, finishing their local matches with a balanced record of 4-4-2. The energetic atmosphere was heightened during the pre-game ceremony, where the coaching staff honored the five sophomores—Diego Briseno, Steven Garcia, Juandiego Rodriguez, Jeffrey Contreras, and Leon Mikailian—for their invaluable contributions over the past two seasons.
The game kicked off with a tense first half that ended without any goals. However, the action ignited just two minutes after the break when Ivan Omana netted his first goal of the season in the 47th minute, assisted by Andrew Sorto. Moments later, Omana struck again in the 48th minute, extending the lead to 2-0 with help from Carlos Mendez.
Citrus College (1-18-1, 1-8) rallied in the 61st minute as Kevin Cardenas scored, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, the Cougars responded decisively. In the 73rd minute, sophomore Jeffrey Contreras scored unassisted, pushing the score to 3-1. Cardenas managed to keep Citrus in contention with another goal shortly after, making it 3-2.
The Cougars displayed relentless energy, with Juandiego Rodriguez scoring twice in quick succession—first in the 74th minute with an assist from Justin Assadi, then again in the 87th minute with a setup from Mikailian. Rodriguez’s goals elevated his total for the season to three, showcasing the team’s depth and talent.
In a final flourish, Mikailian capped the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute, solidifying the Cougars’ emphatic 6-2 triumph. COC goalkeeper Jonathan Mazon started the match with two saves, while David Zendejas (3-8) took over in the second half, ultimately securing the victory.
