Delaware Woman Sentenced to Jail on Drug Charges After Traffic Stop

BREAKING: A Delaware woman, Sherena Cooper, has been sentenced to jail on drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop on June 3, 2024, in Towamencin Township. The 41-year-old resident of the 700 block North Pine Street, Wilmington, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, resulting in a sentence of 7-to-23 months in the Montgomery County Jail.

The incident unfolded around 8:30 PM when state police on patrol along northbound Interstate 476 observed Cooper’s Mercedes Benz E350 speeding at 85 mph in a 55 mph zone. Following the traffic stop, Trooper Andrew Korrubin reported seeing marijuana in plain view and smelling it emanating from the vehicle. Cooper consented to a search, leading to the seizure of approximately a quarter pound of methamphetamine and two ounces of marijuana.

The drugs were subjected to field testing, which returned positive results, confirming their illegal nature. During the sentencing, Judge Risa Vetri Ferman acknowledged letters of support from Cooper’s friends, who described her as a church-going woman with a “kind nature” and a commitment to her family. They expressed hope for her to turn her life around.

Although Cooper faced additional charges, including possession of drug paraphernalia, these were dismissed at the time of sentencing. Notably, Cooper could qualify for the jail’s work release program, allowing her potential early release if her employment is verified.

This case highlights ongoing issues surrounding drug trafficking and public safety on Pennsylvania roads. As authorities continue to combat drug-related offenses, Cooper’s case serves as a significant reminder of the legal consequences of such actions.

What’s Next: The Montgomery County legal system will monitor Cooper’s eligibility for work release, while community discussions around drug use and its impact on families are likely to intensify. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
