UPDATE: The Dexter Regional High School Tigers have just finished third in T-Mobile’s national Friday Night 5G Lights contest, securing a total of $75,000 for their community!
Although the Tigers did not win the coveted $1 million grand prize, their impressive performance with over 500,000 votes has earned them an additional $50,000 on top of the $25,000 awarded as one of 25 national finalists. This funding brings them closer to their goal of upgrading their athletic facilities, particularly adding lights to their football field for home games.
The competition has galvanized the Dexter community and supporters across Maine, showcasing the power of community spirit and teamwork. Despite falling short to Dierks High School in Arkansas, which received more than 2 million votes, the Tigers’ journey has united local residents in a significant way.
“We are incredibly thankful to T-Mobile for giving us the opportunity to put a spotlight on our amazing community,” said Adam Gudroe, Dexter’s athletic director and assistant principal. “Our goal from the start was to add lights to our football field, and with the $75,000 we have been awarded through this competition, we are even closer to making that goal a reality.”
Currently, the Dexter football team faces challenges with their grass field, especially due to Maine’s unpredictable weather. This lack of lighting has prevented them from hosting Friday night home games, a situation that has endured despite their strong football program. The funds secured through this competition are a crucial step toward a brighter future for Dexter athletics.
T-Mobile is set to return to Dexter on November 14, 2023, to celebrate the Tigers’ achievement. The company previously visited the school on October 18 during a home game, solidifying their commitment to enhancing the local community.
