UPDATE: Duluth’s beloved group known as the Laughers is celebrating 18 years of joyful gatherings today, an event that continues to resonate with the community. Every Monday at 11:30 a.m., this informal group meets in front of the Civic Center fountain to engage in a unique laughter therapy session that lasts for just 15 minutes.
Participants do not share jokes; instead, they begin with coordinated arm swings and breathing exercises that culminate in spontaneous laughter. This practice not only promotes joy but also fosters a sense of community among residents. The Laughers’ commitment to laughter as a form of emotional wellness is gaining attention and inspiring others to join in.
In addition to the Laughers, significant historical events from December 27th across the years highlight Duluth’s vibrant community spirit. For instance, in 1955, hockey coach Johnny Mariucci hosted a free clinic for local players and coaches, focusing on conditioning and competitive play. Fast forward to 1975, the annual City Ski Jumping Championship took place at Chester Park, with the 50-meter Big Chester slide expertly groomed by the Duluth Ski Club.
Today, the Laughers’ gathering serves as a reminder of the power of community connection and the importance of joy in everyday life. As they continue to meet and laugh, their impact on the community remains profound and engaging.
As we look ahead, the Laughers invite anyone interested to join their sessions. This grassroots movement not only highlights the importance of laughter but also reinforces the bonds within the Duluth community. Join them every Monday morning and experience the uplifting spirit firsthand!
