Elgin Community College Launches Urgent Black History Month Events

UPDATE: Elgin Community College (ECC) is set to kick off an exciting series of public events for Black History Month, themed “100 Years of Celebrations, Centuries of Legacy.” This celebration marks the 100th year of Black History Month, an important milestone that ECC is eager to honor throughout February.

Beginning on February 11, the college will host a lineup of engaging activities at its campus located at 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin, Illinois. This is a unique opportunity for community members to participate in meaningful discussions and celebrations that highlight the rich history and contributions of the Black community.

The first event, “Nurturing Our Legacy: Mind, Body, and Community,” will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 11. This presentation is designed to foster conversations that celebrate the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and communal health within the Black community, inviting attendees to engage in both personal and collective healing.

Following this, on February 17, ECC will host “Reimagining Genius: A Black Inventor’s Pitch Experience” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This hands-on event encourages students to honor Black inventors by reimagining their creations as modern solutions, enhancing their entrepreneurial skills while sharing innovative ideas with their peers and the community.

On February 19, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., participants can join “The Anatomy of a Bar: Hip-Hop Lyric Writing 101.” This workshop aims to teach powerful storytelling through rap and spoken word, focusing on lyricism, rhythm, and wordplay to enrich narratives and engage audiences.

Another significant event, “MAGIC Event – A Day Without an Immigrant Part 2,” will occur on February 24 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Participants will gain insight into the crucial impact of immigrants on American history, further emphasizing the contributions of diverse cultures in shaping the nation.

Finally, the month will culminate in the “Laced in Legacy Sneaker Ball 2026” on February 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Jobe Lounge. This ticketed event promises an evening filled with stories, songs, and dancing, providing a vibrant atmosphere for community bonding and celebration.
