Esko’s Marisa Pender Reflects on High School Sports Legacy

UPDATE: Marisa Pender, a standout athlete from Esko, Minnesota, reflects on her transformative journey through high school sports, emphasizing the long-term benefits of athletics for character and leadership development. “High school and athletics laid the foundation for who I am,” she stated, highlighting the profound impact these experiences have had on her life.

Marisa, who grew up in Esko and moved there at the age of six, has an impressive history in sports. She participated in cross country, soccer, basketball, and track and field, earning a staggering 18 varsity letters and becoming a 14-time state medalist throughout her high school career. Her dedication and talent shone brightly, particularly as a dual-sport athlete balancing both cross country and soccer.

Throughout her six years as a varsity runner, the Esko girls’ cross country team qualified for the Minnesota State High School League championships each year. In an unforgettable moment during her sophomore year, Marisa not only achieved her goal of medaling but won the state title, describing the experience as “the most euphoric moment.”

“We had something special with a core group of athletes and coaches who believed in us,” said Marisa, who finished fifth individually in her senior year, leading her team to a decisive victory.

The 2012 team, which included Marisa and her younger sister Erika, outperformed their rivals, claiming the title by 35 points over the runner-up. Their success extended beyond cross country, as the Esko girls also clinched state True Team championships in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Despite facing challenges in basketball, where her team consistently found themselves up against formidable opponents like Rebekah Dahlman from Braham High School, Marisa maintained her focus on academics and athletics. Starting in her junior year, she enrolled in college courses through the Postsecondary Education Options program, completing nearly two years of college credits by the time she graduated in 2013.

Marisa continued her athletic career at South Dakota State University on a track and field scholarship. Although she faced injuries during her college tenure, she managed to deliver strong performances, showcasing her resilience and determination.

Now, Marisa competes in CrossFit and trains alongside her husband, Michael Pender. Together, they are raising two children, Jackson and Kiara, while Marisa also earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2023.

Reflecting on her journey, Marisa attributes her success and character to the values instilled during her high school sports experiences: “They provided me with the Finnish word ‘sisu.’ It’s determination, perseverance, grit, and tenacity.”

As Marisa Pender continues to inspire those around her, her story serves as a testament to the lasting impact of high school athletics on personal development and community spirit.
