Fairport’s Yomar Castellano Named Player of the Year, Coaches Honored

UPDATE: Fairport’s standout player, Yomar Castellano, has been named the Division VII Northeast Lakes District Player of the Year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association (OPSMA), an honor just announced on March 3, 2026. This recognition highlights Castellano’s impressive season, where he has led the Skippers to a remarkable 21-2 record.

Castellano’s statistics are nothing short of exceptional, averaging 19.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. His leadership on the court has been pivotal as Fairport prepares for the D-VII district final on March 7. The Skippers have only suffered losses to Riverside and Glenville this season, making their performance even more noteworthy.

The OPSMA all-district selections also recognized Dustin Ettinger as the D-VII Coach of the Year, one of four coaches from the area to receive this distinction. His strategic guidance has been crucial for Fairport’s success and further solidifies the school’s strong basketball program.

In Division III, Josh Jakacki of Kenston also earned Coach of the Year honors. Under his leadership, the Bombers have achieved a 20-3 record, including a remarkable 14-game winning streak mid-season. Kenston is characterized by a well-rounded team with four players averaging double figures.

Chagrin Falls’ David Bargar and Jeff Holzhauer of Keystone shared the Division V Coach of the Year award. The Tigers turned their season around dramatically, going from a 3-4 start to a stunning 16-game win streak, ranking them as the second seed in Division V. Their defensive strategy has been a game-changer, limiting opponents to an average of 46.9 points per game.

In Division VI, Shawn McGregor of Kirtland has also been recognized, leading the Hornets to a 20-3 record following a state semifinal appearance last season. Kirtland has adapted its offensive playstyle, focusing on slashing and leveraging their size inside.

Several area players also received all-district honors across various divisions, showcasing the talent in the region:

  • In Division I, Jack Kennedy (Mentor) and Tony Katava (Mentor) were selected for the first and second teams, respectively.
  • Euclid’s Mekhi Asberry and Kye Owens earned first-team accolades in Division II, with teammate DJ Jenkins on the second team.
