Father-Son Duo Honored as Humboldt Heroes This Friday!

UPDATE: A historic moment for the Humboldt Heroes ceremony is set for noon on December 15, 2023, as a father and son duo, Clemente Cantu and Roy Cantu, will be honored for their distinguished military service in the Army and Navy. This unique recognition at the Eureka Inn marks the first time the ceremony will celebrate both a father and son together.

Clemente Cantu, now a proud resident of Humboldt County, served in the Army after enlisting in 1948. Following World War II, he was deployed to Italy as part of the occupational forces, where he played the trumpet in an infantry and band unit. He met his wife, Maria, in 1949, and together they returned to the United States in 1952 after his honorable discharge. His remarkable 41-year military career continued as he served in various leadership roles, including as the first sergeant in Eureka, before retiring in 1989.

As a local icon, Clemente has contributed to the community as a member of the Red Bluff Elks Lodge and the Eureka VFW Post 1872, where he once served as Post Commander. Despite the loss of his wife in 2019, he continues to cherish his life in Humboldt County, emphasizing the joys of small-town living.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Roy Cantu enlisted in the Navy on Veterans’ Day, November 11, 1968, aiming to gain a technical education and serve his country. He excelled aboard three nuclear ballistic missile submarines, completing an impressive 13 patrols across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as a sonar/electronics technician. Roy’s career culminated in his retirement as a chief petty officer in 1990 after 21 years of dedicated service.

After relocating to Eureka in 1994, Roy built a fulfilling life with his wife, Lori, celebrating their 40th anniversary this past October. His professional journey included roles as a photographer and internet web designer until his retirement in 2012. Roy values the close-knit community of Eureka, which allows him to enjoy nature alongside family and friends.

The monthly Humboldt Heroes celebration highlights local veterans’ sacrifices and contributions to the nation. Interested community members are encouraged to participate in this heartfelt tribute on Friday at 12 PM at the Eureka Inn, located at 518 Seventh Street.
