First Baptist Dallas Rebuilds After Devastating Fire; Team Unites

UPDATE: A devastating four-alarm fire at First Baptist Church of Dallas last year destroyed the historic red-brick sanctuary, with reconstruction now expected to be completed by Easter 2028. As the church navigates this unprecedented crisis, officials confirm that their focus remains on maintaining team unity and supporting their congregation of 16,000 members.

In the aftermath of the fire, staff members were left “scattered,” and as of August, power has yet to be fully restored to the church offices. Ben Lovvorn, the senior executive pastor, emphasized the importance of consistent communication during this challenging time. “We’ve been very purposeful about communicating with our staff—and our congregation—so that they know and understand what’s going on, and that they are a part of the process,” Lovvorn stated.

The church’s commitment to keeping the team intact amidst turmoil is unprecedented. Lovvorn noted, “At other organizations, this situation would lead to tremendous turnover, but our entire team has stayed intact.” This unwavering support has provided much-needed consistency and encouragement to the congregation throughout the rebuilding effort.

First Baptist Church has learned vital lessons from this crisis, particularly the importance of having the right people in place to handle emergencies. “Finding those right people—and getting them in the right seats on the bus—is key to tackling whatever obstacles you’re presented with along the way,” Lovvorn added.

The church staff’s sense of purpose stems from a biblically-based “shared faith and shared calling,” which strengthens their commitment to the community. Lovvorn explained, “Whether they’re a minister or work in our accounting department or in the facilities department, they’re part of something greater.”

To foster this unity, the church organizes regular events, such as monthly all-staff leadership luncheons featuring local favorites like Babe’s Chicken and “staff chapel” sessions, where employees come together to pray and reflect away from daily responsibilities.

First Baptist Church has endured both triumphs and challenges in its more than 155 years in downtown Dallas. Lovvorn remarked, “There have been good times and difficult times, but God has always been faithful in providing for us and seeing us through every season.”

As the rebuilding efforts continue, First Baptist Dallas stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit, proving that even in the face of adversity, a united team can overcome any obstacle. The congregation and staff remain committed to supporting one another as they work towards a brighter future together.
