BREAKING NEWS: Guam Community College (GCC) has officially unveiled its newly renovated Student Success Center with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Mangilao campus. This $6.3 million capital improvement project, which began in July 2022, underscores GCC’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities for students and the community.
The 6,000-square-foot Student Success Center, also known as Building B, is strategically located at the front of the campus. It is set to house essential services including the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, the Faculty Senate office, and a new computer lab on the second floor, featuring an outdoor veranda for students to enjoy.
GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada emphasized the building’s significance, stating, “Most importantly, this building serves as the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin.” She highlighted that the vision for the center originated from the students themselves, showcasing their vital role in shaping campus improvements. “During our recent reaffirmation of eight-year accreditation, the student voice was clearly heard, and this building stands as proof of that,” Okada added.
Designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, this facility is the eighth environmentally sustainable building on campus. Okada praised her team for their dedication, saying, “Everything they do supports our students. From design and grant writing to procurement, construction, and maintenance, the GCC team continues to live by our motto: ‘Students first, mission always.’”
Importantly, Okada noted that this project was financed through the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, resulting in no new debt for the college. “If you look around our campus, you’ll see that we’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community,” she asserted.
This grand opening marks a pivotal moment for GCC as it continues to prioritize student needs and community engagement. The Student Success Center is poised to transform the educational experience, serving as a hub of innovation and support for all students.
