Governor Mifflin Fourth Graders Launch New Businesses Today!

UPDATE: In an inspiring display of creativity and entrepreneurship, fourth graders at Brecknock Elementary School unveiled their miniature businesses in the fictional “Sweet Read City” during an annual business symposium on November 21, 2023. This engaging event attracted a small crowd and culminated in a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the students’ achievements.

The businesses, including GMIS Care Cart and Mustang Keystone, were developed as part of a project designed to teach students about real-world economic concepts and community interdependence. Rachel Sebastian, librarian and organizer of the symposium, emphasized the importance of providing a student-centered learning environment. “Sweet Read City serves as a backdrop for understanding real-world concepts such as the economy, entrepreneurship, and community interdependence,” she stated.

Throughout the semester, students connected with local businesses, gaining insights into the goods and services they offer. This hands-on approach is based on the Total Experience Learning framework, which encourages immersive learning beyond traditional classroom settings. Participating local businesses included Classic Harley Davidson, East Penn Manufacturing, Schlouch Inc., LedgeRock Golf Club, Goodwill Industries, and The Restaurant Store.

These local entrepreneurs played a vital role in mentoring the students, allowing them to learn directly from those in the field. “Experiences like the business symposium not only provide immersive, real-world learning but also nurture innovative, community-minded solutions,” Sebastian added.

The culmination of this project was not just the addition of new businesses to Sweet Read City, but also the opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge through keynote speeches. This event reinforces the significance of experiential learning, equipping students with vital skills for their futures.

Next Steps: As the school year progresses, the Governor Mifflin School District plans to continue fostering entrepreneurial spirit in students, with more projects and initiatives aimed at connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. The success of this symposium sets the stage for future events that inspire creativity and community engagement among young learners.
