Greenville High School Hosts Festive Holiday Dinner for 1,100 Students

UPDATE: Greenville High School rolled out the festive cheer during its annual holiday dinner on December 9, 2023, serving over 1,100 students a traditional feast of ham, mashed potatoes, and glazed carrots. This beloved event, organized by the school district’s food and nutrition department, aimed to ensure that all students, regardless of their backgrounds, enjoyed a special meal during the holiday season.

The holiday dinner not only provided a hearty meal but also fostered a sense of community among students, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds, including international exchange students. Food and Nutrition Director Dan Kuk emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating, “Not all students get to participate in this type of meal, and we want to give them that opportunity.”

Every student at Greenville Public Schools benefits from free or reduced breakfast and lunch, and this holiday dinner was no exception—provided at no cost to students. Kuk remarked, “It’s a little bit of an added expense, but the school district helps out with that.”

With the event drawing significant participation, the logistics were no small feat. “It’s a lot of students to get through, but they are so patient—they know it’s a special event,” said Kuk. The atmosphere was further enhanced with Christmas music and decorations, contributed by DECA students, who also served homemade desserts like apple crumble and cherry turnovers.

Emily Fox, a senior and DECA vice president, highlighted the group’s commitment to making the event special: “We wanted to bring a little something extra for the holiday dinner.” This initiative allows students to experience the joy of giving, as they served fellow students while showcasing the essence of DECA.

Adding to the festive spirit, GHS employee and Greenville City Councilman Claude Johnson transformed into “Santa Claude,” bringing smiles to students’ faces alongside The Grinch. Sophomores Gabby Pelak and Kendal Taylor expressed their delight, with Taylor noting, “It’s really nice and it makes me feel festive,” while Pelak added, “It was also nice to have something to look forward to at lunch.”

This year’s holiday dinner not only fulfilled nutritional needs but also strengthened the bonds within the student body, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration. As the event wrapped up, Kuk praised his staff for their dedication, stating, “I am blessed to have them. That attitude of wanting to serve the student body is what this event is all about.”

As Greenville High School continues to uphold this cherished tradition, the community eagerly anticipates next year’s festivities, ensuring that every student can partake in the joy and warmth of the holiday season.
