Guantanamo Bay Evacuees Return Home After Hurricane Melissa

UPDATE: Evacuees from Guantanamo Bay are returning home following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. They were sheltered at NAS Pensacola, where they received vital support after the storm’s impact.

The evacuation was ordered in late October as Hurricane Melissa approached the Caribbean, causing significant destruction across several miles. Those evacuated were immediately relocated to NAS Pensacola for safety, where they received critical assistance such as food, clothing, and emotional support from local organizations and the community.

“From the onset of us receiving the order to execute, we were out the door,” said Command Master Chief Kenneth Nixon, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay Command Master Chief. He praised the quick and effective response of NAS Pensacola, stating, “The team did an amazing job.”

NAS Pensacola activated its Emergency Family Assistance Center to provide comprehensive support to evacuees. Key organizations, including the American Red Cross and the United Services Organization, worked tirelessly to ensure that evacuees received meals, clothing, and assistance with various needs.

“The community was very receptive, and they welcomed us with open arms,” Command Master Chief Nixon added. The local community significantly contributed by donating meals, pet food, and other supplies to help evacuees feel at home.

For the past three weeks, those remaining at Guantanamo Bay have been diligently working on repairs caused by the hurricane. Now, with conditions improving, evacuees are permitted to return to their homes. “Our community has been nothing short of spectacular supporting these Guantanamo families,” said Captain Chandra ‘Mamassan’ Newman, Naval Air Station Commanding Officer.

He expressed pride in both the team and the community, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder of the community we serve and that supports us.” The return of these families marks a significant step towards recovery and rebuilding after the storm’s aftermath.

As the situation develops, the focus will remain on ongoing repairs and community support for those impacted by Hurricane Melissa. This urgent return highlights the resilience of the affected communities and the collaborative efforts that made the recovery process possible.
