UPDATE: Heroes and Helpers just marked its 10th anniversary of bringing holiday joy to Bemidji’s youth on December 13, 2023. This annual event, hosted by local law enforcement and Lions Clubs, is vital for fostering positive relations between children and police while ensuring they receive gifts this season.
Parents and children flocked to the “Sparkle Shop” at Walmart in Bemidji, where 44 children were paired with heroes from the Bemidji Fire Department, Police Department, and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. Each child received $125 to shop for gifts, significantly expanding the initiative from its humble beginnings of 20 children in 2016.
Officer Tabitha Carrigan, the event organizer, highlighted the growth over the years. “It’s pretty cool to see how we’ve expanded,” she noted. “This year, we’re thrilled to include nine children from Blackduck, thanks to former police officer Travis Amsden, who now works with us at the Sheriff’s Office.”
With the excitement of shopping, the event also featured Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with delicious snacks and hot chocolate for the children. The wrapping station was bustling as Lions Club members transformed the gifts into holiday surprises.
Longtime Lions Club President Bob Sandbo shared, “I’ve been here every year, helping in various capacities. It’s a great way to interact with different community members outside of emergency situations.” He and his wife, Shirley, have made this an annual tradition, showcasing the event’s community spirit.
Despite the festive atmosphere, Carrigan emphasized the ongoing challenge of funding. “Fundraising is crucial,” she said, noting that the cost for 44 children adds up to $5,500. “I need to know by October how much money we have to work with, which determines how many kids we can invite.”
As the event concluded, Carrigan remained focused on ensuring everything ran smoothly, continuously checking in on participants. “I have yet to shop with a kid, but seeing their joy when they finish shopping makes it all worthwhile,” she said with a smile.
This beloved tradition continues to grow, reinforcing community bonds and spreading holiday cheer, reminding all involved of the importance of giving back. With the holiday season in full swing, the impact of Heroes and Helpers resonates more than ever, showing that even small acts of kindness can create lasting memories.
