Holy Family Haven Opens 72 Affordable Apartments in Clarkston

UPDATE: Clarkston celebrates the grand opening of Holy Family Haven, a new apartment complex offering 72 affordable housing units designed to help families in need. The official ceremony, attended by city leaders and community members, took place on October 25, 2023, marking a significant step toward addressing housing insecurity in the area.

The project, inspired by students from Holy Family Catholic School, features artwork and creative input from local children who played a vital role in naming the complex. “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening,” stated Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing.

Already, half of the units are occupied, with families moving in quickly. Mallahan noted, “30% of the units are still available,” urging qualifying families to contact Catholic Charities for application details. The complex, located at 1411 Port Drive, is not merely a housing facility but a community aimed at providing a foundation for lasting change in residents’ lives.

During the opening ceremony, Mayor Monika Lawrence praised the project, highlighting the commitment of John Pilcher, executive director of Horizon Housing Alliance. “He promised Clarkston a top-notch housing project, and he really delivered,” she said. The complex aims to provide a safe, supportive environment for families, with 70 units dedicated to those earning 30% to 60% of the area median income and 35 units reserved for individuals who have experienced homelessness.

Holy Family Haven will offer a comprehensive array of support services, including mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery, transportation to medical appointments, and employment assistance. Additionally, residents will have access to fresh, healthy food distribution, ensuring a holistic approach to community support.

KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment has provided $31.4 million in capital for this significant initiative. The apartments are designed to cater to families struggling to make ends meet, offering more than just shelter—it’s a step towards stability and self-sufficiency.
