URGENT UPDATE: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has officially unveiled a brand-new outdoor “catio” space designed to enhance the lives of adoptable cats and accelerate their chances of finding forever homes. The grand reveal took place earlier today in Vallejo, offering a safe haven for the shelter’s feline residents to bask in the sun and enjoy fresh air.
This innovative structure features wrap-around enclosed hard netting, allowing cats to experience the great outdoors in a secure environment. With multi-level platforms, cozy nooks, and shaded perches, the catio provides a perfect setting for cats to lounge, play, and socialize. According to Kristina George, a staff member at HSNB, “Having the space to come out and roam… benefits everybody.” This new facility is expected to significantly boost socialization among the cats, ultimately leading to increased adoption rates.
The Ila Emerson Memorial Catio, named in honor of a beloved Vallejo resident and animal advocate, has been constructed with the help of local donors and businesses. The project took approximately seven weeks to complete, with materials contributed by Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber, and designed by Marin-based specialist Roger Sierra and his son, Brooke.
Director Carol Stillson emphasized the importance of the catio, noting that prior to its installation, the shelter could only accommodate about 60 cats in limited indoor spaces. “Before, cats were confined… at times, cats kind of shut down,” she explained. Now, with the catio, adoptable kitties can enjoy a “taste of nature” while waiting for their new families.
Scheduled meet-and-greets in the catio allow potential adopters to interact with the cats in a relaxed setting, encouraging bonding and play. This initiative marks a new chapter for the shelter, aimed at streamlining the adoption process and finding homes for more cats.
In addition to the catio launch, HSNB has announced an annual adoption special starting on November 1, 2023. The shelter will offer reduced rates on black and tuxedo cats, with $50 off kitten adoption fees and $25 off for cats aged six months and older. To encourage adopting pairs, a discount of $50 will be available, providing $25 off each cat.
HSNB Board President Joseph Hayden explained the importance of this initiative during a time when black cats face stigmas associated with superstitions. “We want to keep the cats safe,” he stated, as adoptions for black cats are paused through late October.
“Our shelter prides itself on low return rates and thorough vetting of potential owners,” Hayden added. “We do our homework…because we want to make sure it’s in the best interest of the animal.”
For those interested in adopting or learning more about the HSNB, additional details can be found on their official website. The new catio represents not just a physical space, but a heartfelt commitment to enhancing the lives of shelter cats and connecting them with loving families.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops and as HSNB embarks on a new journey towards increased adoptions and community engagement.
