UPDATE: The community mourns the loss of James Donald “Jim” Early, who passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Known for his unwavering dedication to education and community service, Jim’s impact will resonate deeply within Waterford and beyond.
Born on July 3, Jim celebrated his birthday with the fervor of Independence Day, reflecting his vibrant spirit. He was the third of five children of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq., and Loretto Powers Early, and is survived by his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Jim’s life was marked by profound love and commitment. He married Helen K. Clark in June 1967, and together they raised five daughters, including the late Mary Ellen Early, who predeceased him on June 26, 2025. His surviving daughters—Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early—along with his nine cherished grandchildren, will remember him as a devoted father and grandfather.
A proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years, Jim exemplified community service and camaraderie. He also served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls before teaching English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College from 1967 until his retirement in December 1999. His influence shaped countless students, and his legacy continues to inspire.
In addition to his educational career, Jim served as Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade, demonstrating his commitment to public service. A talented pipe organist, he contributed to the musical life of Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club.
Jim’s health declined in his later years, and he received loving care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy. His funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a service at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at noon. Interment will occur at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. The Early family requests contributions in Jim’s memory to The Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department, emphasizing his life of service and support for the community he cherished.
