Jingle Bell Dash Raises Funds for LGBTQ+ Youth Programs in Kingston

UPDATE: The Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, N.Y. just concluded, successfully raising funds for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s youth outreach programs. Held on December 2, 2023, the event attracted 40 runners, many donning festive holiday attire, as they braved the chilly temperatures to support a vital cause.

Participants gathered on North Front Street for a spirited run through the historic Stockade District, covering approximately eight blocks. Some opted for warm layers, while others embraced the festive spirit with minimal clothing. Pre-race celebrations included espresso martinis at Hotel Kinsley, further energizing the runners for the event.

This year marked the event’s second annual occurrence, following its inception in 2022. Inspired by similar runs like the Santa Speedo Sprint in Albany, the Jingle Bell Dash aims to combine fun with meaningful community support.

“We had double the turnout compared to last year,” said Stephan Hengst, co-director of Big Gay Hudson Valley and an event organizer. “It’s about visibility for the queer community, celebrating the holidays, and raising funds for the center’s programs.”

The funds generated during the dash will directly benefit the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s “Gen Q” youth programs. Executive Director Richard Heyl de Ortiz emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating,

“We’re always here when a young person comes in, just to talk to someone.”

The center also supports school staff in understanding how to best assist LGBTQ+ students.

Additionally, the center hosts a “Gen Z Drop-in” event, providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to connect and share experiences. Hengst expressed optimism about the future of the event, noting, “Our goal is 100 people next year.”

The Jingle Bell Dash not only highlights community spirit but also serves as a crucial fundraiser for programs that foster inclusivity and support for LGBTQ+ youth. As the event wraps up, organizers are already looking ahead to make next year’s dash even more impactful.
