UPDATE: Major changes are coming to Kuakini Highway in Kona as the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has just announced a significant speed limit reduction to enhance safety. The speed limit will drop from 55 mph to 45 mph along a crucial stretch of road, from mile markers 113.6 to 117.1. This change will take effect in 30 days as new signage is installed.
This urgent decision aims to protect community members who frequent the area, which includes essential hubs like Harold H. Higashihara Park and Kamakana Playground, as well as a place of worship and a scenic lookout. With children and elderly residents regularly using these facilities, the reduction is designed to create a safer environment for all road users.
According to HDOT’s official statement, “The purpose of the speed reduction is to provide a manageable, safe, and consistent speed limit for this section of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11).” This proactive measure reflects a commitment to road safety and acknowledges the high volume of pedestrian traffic in the area.
The changes will affect both directions of travel on this segment, emphasizing the importance of safety for every motorist and pedestrian. Beyond the speed limit adjustments, HDOT is implementing additional strategies to enhance traffic flow and safety, including new roundabouts and elevated pedestrian crossings.
Motorists are urged to prepare for this transition and to drive cautiously as the new speed limit will soon be in place. The overarching goal is to significantly reduce serious injuries and fatalities on the road while fostering an efficient transportation system.
